A well-designed and properly installed façade can define a new building, or transform an existing building. Cladding is particularly valuable in meeting green building requirements, and is often employed when an older building requires a new ‘face’ that will also create a more weatherproof and longer-lasting envelope.
A building’s facade is the skin that divides exterior from interior space. It protects the building and has a crucial role in the management of heat and light within the building.
Because they are exposed to the weather, façades require superior quality products and engineering to ensure their continued good looks and success. Façade Zone use only the highest quality products, and our years of experience ensure that we will find the right solution for your building.
How can the choice of façade affect my building design?
Façades range from the very straightforward – a classic stone cladding, for example – to highly complex combinations of varying thicknesses of glass combined and stacked in different ways. These obviously have great effect on the look of a building, and can be planned to vary that effect in different ways. Certain materials weather in very specific ways over time, subtly changing the whole look of the building over a period of years. Many architects have only discovered this, to their cost, after selecting fashionable new materials for building cladding, only to find that exposure to the elements resulted in the building quickly looking ‘dirty’ and aged. Glass is, of course, favoured for its reflective properties, allowing a building to reflect different ‘moods’ according to the weather and time of day.
Aside from the materials used, the way in which the cladding materials are affixed to one another, and to the building frame itself, affects the air flow, the way the building responds to changes in climate, the angles at which light enters the building, and so on. This obviously has an effect on the building’s Green Building status, but also can have a great effect on how the building’s users experience the space.
Cladding can be a simple and straightforward element of your design, or it can change your building’s relationship to the exterior in obvious or subtle ways. You are limited only by your vision. If you can envision it, Façade Zone have engineers who can work with you to design it, manufacture and install it.
